Lao Feng Xiang Heritage Store Relighting

Lao Feng Xiang, a name synonymous with fine Chinese jewelry for over 170 years, represents a legacy of exquisite craftsmanship and cultural heritage. Their flagship store in Nanjing's prestigious Xinjiekou district is more than a retail space; it's a testament to the brand's enduring prestige. To align the in-store experience with the unparalleled quality of their jewelry, Lao Feng Xiang partnered with XHLWX Lighting to execute a comprehensive lighting overhaul. The mission was to transform the ambiance, enhance the product presentation, and future-proof the store's operations, all while respecting its storied past.
Our challenge was to use light not just for illumination, but as a tool to tell a story—the story of each perfectly crafted piece. The project successfully replaced an outdated, inefficient system with a state-of-the-art, multi-layered lighting design that makes gold gleam, diamonds dance, and jade radiate with inner life, reaffirming the store's status as a premier destination for luxury jewelry.
Project Background & Customer Challenges
The Lao Feng Xiang heritage store on Zhongshan South Road is a landmark in Nanjing's busiest commercial hub. While the brand's reputation was impeccable, the store's physical environment had begun to show its age, primarily through its lighting. The existing system, a mix of older generation LEDs and residual halogen fixtures, presented several critical challenges that undermined the luxury experience and operational efficiency.
Key Pain Points:
-
Poor Color Fidelity: The previous lighting had a low Color Rendering Index (CRI). This resulted in a distorted perception of the jewelry's true color. Gold pieces appeared dull and lacked their characteristic warm luster, while precious gemstones like jade and ruby looked muted. For a business where subtle variations in color determine value, this was a significant handicap.
-
Lack of 'Sparkle': Diamond and faceted gemstone presentation suffered immensely. The old lighting was diffuse and lacked the precise, high-intensity beams needed to create 'fire' and 'scintillation'—the captivating play of light that defines a diamond's beauty. The gems simply didn't "pop" from their displays.
-
High Energy Costs and Heat Load: The reliance on outdated technology led to exorbitant energy bills. Furthermore, the fixtures generated substantial heat, creating an uncomfortable environment for customers browsing near display cases. This excess heat also put a continuous strain on the store's air conditioning system, compounding operational costs.
-
Visual Discomfort and Glare: Unshielded and poorly aimed light sources created significant glare. This visual noise was distracting for customers, cheapened the overall atmosphere, and drew attention away from the merchandise. Instead of a comfortable, immersive experience, it felt harsh and commercial.
-
Inflexible and High-Maintenance: The system was static, with no ability to adapt to new collections, seasonal displays, or special events. Moreover, the shorter lifespan of the old lamps meant frequent replacements, leading to maintenance downtime and inconsistent illumination as fixtures failed.
The XHLWX Lighting Solution: A Symphony of Light and Luxury
Our design team approached the project with a philosophy of "painting with light." The goal was to create a layered, hierarchical lighting scheme that guides the customer's eye, creates visual comfort, and ultimately places the jewelry center stage. We combined ambient, accent, and vertical lighting to build a rich, dynamic, and luxurious environment.
Fixture Selection:
-
Accent Lighting for Display Cases: The core of the solution involved our
XHL-TR97-N7series of high-performance track spotlights. These were chosen for their exceptional performance and versatility.- Beam Angles: We used a combination of very narrow 8° beams for individual rings and gemstones to create dramatic sparkle, and 15° beams for necklaces and bracelets to provide a complete yet focused wash of light.
- Color Temperature Strategy: For diamond, platinum, and white gold displays, we specified a crisp 4000K CCT to accentuate their coolness and brilliance. For yellow gold, rose gold, and jade, a warm 3000K CCT was used to enrich their natural color and depth.
-
General & Ambient Lighting: For the store's circulation areas, we installed the
XHL-DL22-Gseries of deep-recessed, anti-glare downlights.- These fixtures, with a Unified Glare Rating (UGR) of less than 16, provide a soft, comfortable ambient light at 3000K. This creates a welcoming and high-end atmosphere, ensuring the transition between display areas feels seamless and luxurious.
-
Vertical & Architectural Lighting: To add depth and highlight the store's architectural features and branding, we utilized the
XHL-WL5-Alinear wall washers. These fixtures cast a smooth, uniform light across vertical surfaces, making the space feel larger and drawing attention to the iconic Lao Feng Xiang logo and beautifully textured wall panels.
Every fixture was selected not just for its technical specifications but for its ability to contribute to a cohesive and emotionally resonant shopping experience.
Technical Highlights: Precision Engineered for Brilliance
Three technical pillars defined the success of this project, directly addressing the client's most pressing challenges.
-
1. Superior Color Rendition (CRI 97+): In jewelry retail, color is everything. We deployed our
XHL-TR97-N7spotlights featuring our proprietary vColor™ LED technology, which boasts a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 97+ and a crucial R9 (deep red) value exceeding 90. For Lao Feng Xiang, this meant their 24-karat gold now radiates with its authentic, deep yellow hue. The rich reds of rubies are vibrant and saturated, and the subtle green variations in jade are clearly visible. This level of color accuracy empowers customers to make confident purchasing decisions and fully appreciate the craftsmanship of each piece. -
2. Glare-Free Comfort (UGR < 16): A luxury environment must be comfortable. Glare is the enemy of comfort. Our
XHL-DL22-Gdownlights andXHL-TR97-N7spotlights are engineered with advanced optics, including deep-set LED sources and black honeycomb louvers. This design directs light precisely where it's needed—on the merchandise—while shielding the source from the customer's line of sight. This achieves an exceptionally low Unified Glare Rating (UGR) throughout the store. Customers can now spend extended time examining pieces in brilliant light without squinting or feeling visual fatigue, significantly enhancing dwell time and customer experience. -
3. High Luminous Efficacy & Massive Energy Savings: The new all-LED solution from XHLWX represents a quantum leap in efficiency. By replacing the old system, we reduced the total connected lighting load from approximately 18,000 watts to just 6,500 watts—a direct 64% reduction. Our fixtures achieve a high luminous efficacy of over 115 lm/W, delivering more, higher-quality light for a fraction of the power. This not only slashes electricity costs but also dramatically reduces the heat output, lessening the burden on the HVAC system and creating a cooler, more pleasant environment for staff and clients.
Installation & Commissioning: Flawless Execution
A superior lighting design is only as good as its implementation. The XHLWX project team worked closely with the store's management to ensure a seamless transition with zero disruption to business operations. The installation was carried out overnight in carefully planned phases.
The most critical stage was commissioning. This is where art meets science. Our certified lighting technicians spent two nights on-site after installation for the final aiming process. Each of the 200+ spotlights was meticulously adjusted by hand. Using techniques like cross-lighting, we aimed multiple beams at high-value diamond pieces to maximize faceting and sparkle from every viewing angle. We carefully sculpted the light within each display case, creating a distinct focal point for each item while ensuring a harmonious overall presentation. We also integrated the entire system onto a DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) control panel, providing staff with simple, pre-set scenes for 'Day,' 'Evening,' and 'Special Event' modes, offering both automation and flexibility.
Measured Results: A Tangible Transformation
The results of the relighting project were immediate and measurable, confirmed by both quantitative data and enthusiastic feedback from the client.
-
Illuminance Levels: We achieved the precise, hierarchical light levels set out in our design. General pathways are now comfortably lit at ~500 lux. Display cabinets with gold and jade average a vibrant 1,500 lux. Crucially, diamond and high-value gemstone displays now command attention with a dazzling 2,800 - 3,200 lux directly on the merchandise.
-
Color Temperature (CCT): The dual-CCT strategy has been a resounding success. The 3000K ambient light creates a welcoming warmth, while the targeted 4000K accent light makes the diamonds and platinum look exceptionally brilliant and clean, just as intended.
-
Energy Savings: Post-project analysis confirmed a 64% reduction in lighting-related electricity consumption, translating into significant annual operational savings and a vastly improved carbon footprint for the store.
-
Client Feedback: The store manager reported that within the first month, customer dwell time had noticeably increased. They received numerous compliments on the new atmosphere, with customers often remarking that the jewelry "has never looked so beautiful." Most importantly, they noted a tangible increase in sales, particularly for high-margin diamond and colored stone pieces, which now captivate buyers with their enhanced sparkle and color.
FAQ
Q1: What is the best color temperature (CCT) for lighting gold jewelry versus diamonds? For yellow and rose gold, we strongly recommend a warm CCT, typically 3000K. This CCT has more energy in the yellow/red part of the spectrum, which enriches the metal's natural color, making it look deeper and more luxurious. For diamonds, platinum, and white gold, a cooler CCT of 4000K is ideal. The neutral-to-cool white light enhances the stone's brilliance and icy fire, making it appear whiter and more sparkly.
Q2: How did you manage to make the jewelry so bright without creating uncomfortable glare for customers? This was achieved through meticulous fixture design and precise aiming. Our spotlights use deep-recessed LED chips and optical-grade lenses that shape the light into a tight, controlled beam. We also add a honeycomb louver accessory to each fixture. This grid blocks any stray light that could cause glare, ensuring the beam only illuminates the intended target (the jewelry) while the light source remains virtually invisible to the shopper.
Q3: Can the Lao Feng Xiang staff adjust the lighting for different promotions or holidays? Yes. We integrated the entire system with a user-friendly DALI control panel. We programmed several pre-set scenes, such as 'Opening,' 'Standard Day,' 'Evening,' and 'Cleaning.' The staff can switch between these scenes with a single button press. This allows them to instantly adapt the store's atmosphere, for example, by increasing the brightness during a special product launch or creating a softer mood for a VIP evening event.
